Nick and Riordan each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Nick filled up 13 bottles and had 2.5 ℓ of water left. Riordan filled up 9 bottles and had 4.5 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Nick and Riordan had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 13 - 9
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 4.5 - 2.5
= 2 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2 ÷ 4
= 0.5 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.5 ℓ = 0.5 x 1000 = 500 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 9 bottles
= 9 x 0.5
= 4.5 ℓ
Volume of water that Riordan had at first
= 4.5 + 4.5
= 9 ℓ
Total volume of water that Nick and Riordan had at first
= 2 x 9
= 18 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 500 mℓ (b) 18 ℓ
