Howard and Ken each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Howard filled up 16 bottles and had 11.8 ℓ of water left. Ken filled up 10 bottles and had 13 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Howard and Ken had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 16 - 10
= 6
Difference between the volume of water left
= 13 - 11.8
= 1.2 ℓ
Volume of 6 bottles = 1.2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.2 ÷ 6
= 0.2 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.2 ℓ = 0.2 x 1000 = 200 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 10 bottles
= 10 x 0.2
= 2 ℓ
Volume of water that Ken had at first
= 2 + 13
= 15 ℓ
Total volume of water that Howard and Ken had at first
= 2 x 15
= 30 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 200 mℓ (b) 30 ℓ
