Ivan and Eric each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Ivan filled up 10 bottles and had 3 ℓ of water left. Eric filled up 6 bottles and had 5 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Ivan and Eric had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 10 - 6
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 5 - 3
= 2 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2 ÷ 4
= 0.5 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.5 ℓ = 0.5 x 1000 = 500 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 6 bottles
= 6 x 0.5
= 3 ℓ
Volume of water that Eric had at first
= 3 + 5
= 8 ℓ
Total volume of water that Ivan and Eric had at first
= 2 x 8
= 16 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 500 mℓ (b) 16 ℓ
