Zeph and Xavier each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Zeph filled up 7 bottles and had 8.1 ℓ of water left. Xavier filled up 5 bottles and had 8.5 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Zeph and Xavier had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 7 - 5
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 8.5 - 8.1
= 0.4 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 0.4 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 0.4 ÷ 2
= 0.2 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.2 ℓ = 0.2 x 1000 = 200 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 0.2
= 1 ℓ
Volume of water that Xavier had at first
= 1 + 8.5
= 9.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Zeph and Xavier had at first
= 2 x 9.5
= 19 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 200 mℓ (b) 19 ℓ
