Fabian and Carl each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Fabian filled up 17 bottles and had 5.6 ℓ of water left. Carl filled up 11 bottles and had 6.8 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Fabian and Carl had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 17 - 11
= 6
Difference between the volume of water left
= 6.8 - 5.6
= 1.2 ℓ
Volume of 6 bottles = 1.2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.2 ÷ 6
= 0.2 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.2 ℓ = 0.2 x 1000 = 200 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 11 bottles
= 11 x 0.2
= 2.2 ℓ
Volume of water that Carl had at first
= 2.2 + 6.8
= 9 ℓ
Total volume of water that Fabian and Carl had at first
= 2 x 9
= 18 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 200 mℓ (b) 18 ℓ
