Carl and Liam each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Carl filled up 18 bottles and had 5 ℓ of water left. Liam filled up 12 bottles and had 8 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Carl and Liam had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 18 - 12
= 6
Difference between the volume of water left
= 8 - 5
= 3 ℓ
Volume of 6 bottles = 3 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 3 ÷ 6
= 0.5 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.5 ℓ = 0.5 x 1000 = 500 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 12 bottles
= 12 x 0.5
= 6 ℓ
Volume of water that Liam had at first
= 6 + 8
= 14 ℓ
Total volume of water that Carl and Liam had at first
= 2 x 14
= 28 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 500 mℓ (b) 28 ℓ
