Henry and Daniel each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Henry filled up 7 bottles and had 3.9 ℓ of water left. Daniel filled up 5 bottles and had 5.5 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Henry and Daniel had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 7 - 5
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 5.5 - 3.9
= 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.6 ÷ 2
= 0.8 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.8 ℓ = 0.8 x 1000 = 800 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 0.8
= 4 ℓ
Volume of water that Daniel had at first
= 4 + 5.5
= 9.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Henry and Daniel had at first
= 2 x 9.5
= 19 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 800 mℓ (b) 19 ℓ
