Brandon and Liam each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Brandon filled up 15 bottles and had 3 ℓ of water left. Liam filled up 11 bottles and had 6.2 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Brandon and Liam had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 15 - 11
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 6.2 - 3
= 3.2 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 3.2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 3.2 ÷ 4
= 0.8 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.8 ℓ = 0.8 x 1000 = 800 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 11 bottles
= 11 x 0.8
= 8.8 ℓ
Volume of water that Liam had at first
= 8.8 + 6.2
= 15 ℓ
Total volume of water that Brandon and Liam had at first
= 2 x 15
= 30 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 800 mℓ (b) 30 ℓ
