Simon and Howard each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Simon filled up 17 bottles and had 4.1 ℓ of water left. Howard filled up 9 bottles and had 5.7 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Simon and Howard had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 17 - 9
= 8
Difference between the volume of water left
= 5.7 - 4.1
= 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 8 bottles = 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.6 ÷ 8
= 0.2 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.2 ℓ = 0.2 x 1000 = 200 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 9 bottles
= 9 x 0.2
= 1.8 ℓ
Volume of water that Howard had at first
= 1.8 + 5.7
= 7.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Simon and Howard had at first
= 2 x 7.5
= 15 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 200 mℓ (b) 15 ℓ
