Bryan and Zane each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Bryan filled up 11 bottles and had 10.3 ℓ of water left. Zane filled up 9 bottles and had 10.7 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Bryan and Zane had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 11 - 9
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 10.7 - 10.3
= 0.4 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 0.4 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 0.4 ÷ 2
= 0.2 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.2 ℓ = 0.2 x 1000 = 200 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 9 bottles
= 9 x 0.2
= 1.8 ℓ
Volume of water that Zane had at first
= 1.8 + 10.7
= 12.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Bryan and Zane had at first
= 2 x 12.5
= 25 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 200 mℓ (b) 25 ℓ
