Neave and Ivan each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Neave filled up 14 bottles and had 5 ℓ of water left. Ivan filled up 10 bottles and had 5.88 ℓ of water left.

Let 1 B be the volume of 1 bottle of water.
Volume of water that Neave had = 14 B + 5 --- (1)
Volume of water that Ivan had = 10 B + 5.88 --- (2)
The volume of water that Neave and Ivan have is the same.
(1) = (2)
14 B + 5 = 10 B + 5.88
14 B - 10 B = 5.88 - 5
4 B = 0.88
1 B = 0.88 ÷ 4 = 0.22
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.22 ℓ = 0.22 x 1000 = 220 mℓ

Volume of 14 bottles
= 14 x 0.22
= 3.08 ℓ
Volume of water that Neave had at first
= 14 B + 5
= 14 x 0.22 + 5
= 3.08 + 5
= 8.08 ℓ
Total volume of water that Neave and Ivan had at first
= 2 x 8.08
= 16.16 ℓ
