Ian and Glen each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Ian filled up 18 bottles and had 2 ℓ of water left. Glen filled up 14 bottles and had 2.52 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Ian and Glen had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Let 1 B be the volume of 1 bottle of water.
Volume of water that Ian had = 18 B + 2 --- (1)
Volume of water that Glen had = 14 B + 2.52 --- (2)
The volume of water that Ian and Glen have is the same.
(1) = (2)
18 B + 2 = 14 B + 2.52
18 B - 14 B = 2.52 - 2
4 B = 0.52
1 B = 0.52 ÷ 4 = 0.13
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.13 ℓ = 0.13 x 1000 = 130 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 18 bottles
= 18 x 0.13
= 2.34 ℓ
Volume of water that Ian had at first
= 18 B + 2
= 18 x 0.13 + 2
= 2.34 + 2
= 4.34 ℓ
Total volume of water that Ian and Glen had at first
= 2 x 4.34
= 8.68 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 130 mℓ; (b) 8.68 ℓ
