The number of puffs that Julian and Tim each had in the end is the same. Make the number of puffs that Julian and Tim each had in the end the same. LCM of 3 and 1 is 3.
Number of puffs that Julian had less than Tim at first
= 9 u - 5 u
= 4 u
4 u = 40
1 u = 40 ÷ 4 = 10
Number of puffs that Julian had at first
= 5 u
= 5 x 10
= 50
