There was 9.9 ℓ of water in a basin and 1.5 ℓ of water in a tank. Neave then poured in an equal volume of water into each container. Now, the volume of water in the basin is 4 times in the tank. How much water did Neave pour into each container?

4 u |
1 u |
3 u |
Difference in the volume of water between the basin and the tank
= 9.9 - 1.5
= 8.4 ℓ
Since Neave poured in an equal volume of water into each container, the difference in the volume of water at first and in the end remains the same.
3 u = 8.4
1 u = 8.4 ÷ 3 = 2.8
Volume of water that Neave poured into each container
= 1 u - 1.5
= 2.8 - 1.5
= 1.3 ℓ
Answer(s): 1.3 ℓ
