There was 5.7 ℓ of water in a basin and 1.5 ℓ of water in a tank. Seth then poured in an equal volume of water into each container. Now, the volume of water in the basin is 3 times in the tank. How much water did Seth pour into each container?

After |
3 u |
1 u |
2 u |
Difference in the volume of water between the basin and the tank
= 5.7 - 1.5
= 4.2 ℓ
Since Seth poured in an equal volume of water into each container, the difference in the volume of water at first and in the end remains the same.
2 u = 4.2
1 u = 4.2 ÷ 2 = 2.1
Volume of water that Seth poured into each container
= 1 u - 1.5
= 2.1 - 1.5
= 0.6 ℓ
Answer(s): 0.6 ℓ
