There was 12.8 ℓ of water in a basin and 1.6 ℓ of water in a tank. Tommy then poured in an equal volume of water into each container. Now, the volume of water in the basin is 5 times in the tank. How much water did Tommy pour into each container?

5 u |

4 u |
Difference in the volume of water between the basin and the tank
= 12.8 - 1.6
= 11.2 ℓ
Since Tommy poured in an equal volume of water into each container, the difference in the volume of water at first and in the end remains the same.
4 u = 11.2
1 u = 11.2 ÷ 4 = 2.8
Volume of water that Tommy poured into each container
= 1 u - 1.6
= 2.8 - 1.6
= 1.2 ℓ
Answer(s): 1.2 ℓ
