There was 6.8 ℓ of water in a tank and 1.2 ℓ of water in a pail. Fred then poured in an equal volume of water into each container. Now, the volume of water in the tank is 3 times in the pail. How much water did Fred pour into each container?

3 u |
1 u |
2 u |
Difference in the volume of water between the tank and the pail
= 6.8 - 1.2
= 5.6 ℓ
Since Fred poured in an equal volume of water into each container, the difference in the volume of water at first and in the end remains the same.
2 u = 5.6
1 u = 5.6 ÷ 2 = 2.8
Volume of water that Fred poured into each container
= 1 u - 1.2
= 2.8 - 1.2
= 1.6 ℓ
Answer(s): 1.6 ℓ
