Hilda bought some sweets and gave half of it to Julian. Julian bought some chocolate bars and gave half of it to Hilda. Hilda ate 5 chocolate bars and Julian ate 35 sweets. The ratio of Hilda's chocolate bars to sweets became 1 : 5 and the ratio of Julian's chocolate bars to sweets became 1 : 2. How many sweets did Hilda buy?

After Hilda gave half of the sweets to Julian and Julian gave half of his chocolate bars to Hilda, Julian and Hilda had same number of chocolate bars and sweets before each ate some.

5 u = 2 p + 35 
5 u - 35 = 2 p --- (1)

1 u + 5 = 1 p --- (2)

Make p the same.

5 u - 35 = 2 u + 10 
5 u - 2 u = 10 + 35
3 u = 45

1 u = 45 ÷ 3 = 15
