Raeann bought some sweets and gave half of it to Wesley. Wesley bought some candy canes and gave half of it to Raeann. Raeann ate 4 candy canes and Wesley ate 12 sweets. The ratio of Raeann's candy canes to sweets became 1 : 4 and the ratio of Wesley's candy canes to sweets became 1 : 2. How many candy canes did Wesley buy?

After Raeann gave half of the sweets to Wesley and Wesley gave half of his candy canes to Raeann, Wesley and Raeann had same number of candy canes and sweets before each ate some.

4 u = 2 p + 12 
4 u - 12 = 2 p --- (1)

1 u + 4 = 1 p --- (2)

Make p the same.

4 u - 2 u = 8 + 12
