Hilda bought some lollipops and gave half of it to Rael. Rael bought some sweets and gave half of it to Hilda. Hilda ate 2 sweets and Rael ate 14 lollipops. The ratio of Hilda's sweets to lollipops became 1 : 4 and the ratio of Rael's sweets to lollipops became 1 : 2. How many sweets did Rael buy?

After Hilda gave half of the lollipops to Rael and Rael gave half of his sweets to Hilda, Rael and Hilda had same number of sweets and lollipops before each ate some.

4 u = 2 p + 14 
4 u - 14 = 2 p --- (1)

1 u + 2 = 1 p --- (2)

Make p the same.

4 u - 14 = 2 u + 4 
4 u - 2 u = 4 + 14
2 u = 18

1 u = 18 ÷ 2 = 9

= 1 u + 2
= 9 + 2

= 2 p
= 2 x 11
= 22
