Linda bought some jelly beans and gave half of it to Justin. Justin bought some sweets and gave half of it to Linda. Linda ate 6 sweets and Justin ate 44 jelly beans. The ratio of Linda's sweets to jelly beans became 1 : 6 and the ratio of Justin's sweets to jelly beans became 1 : 2. How many sweets did Justin buy?

After Linda gave half of the jelly beans to Justin and Justin gave half of his sweets to Linda, Justin and Linda had same number of sweets and jelly beans before each ate some.

6 u = 2 p + 44 
6 u - 44 = 2 p --- (1)

1 u + 6 = 1 p --- (2)

Make p the same.

6 u - 2 u = 12 + 44
4 u = 56

1 u = 56 ÷ 4 = 14
