Nicole bought some jelly beans and gave half of it to Jeremy. Jeremy bought some chocolate bars and gave half of it to Nicole. Nicole ate 3 chocolate bars and Jeremy ate 39 jelly beans. The ratio of Nicole's chocolate bars to jelly beans became 1 : 6 and the ratio of Jeremy's chocolate bars to jelly beans became 1 : 3. How many chocolate bars did Jeremy buy?

After Nicole gave half of the jelly beans to Jeremy and Jeremy gave half of his chocolate bars to Nicole, Jeremy and Nicole had same number of chocolate bars and jelly beans before each ate some.

6 u = 3 p + 39 
6 u - 39 = 3 p --- (1)

1 u + 3 = 1 p --- (2)

Make p the same.

6 u - 3 u = 9 + 39
