PSLE: Dos and donts during PSLE examinations
After studying so hard for PSLE and having intensive revision, the PSLE examinations are drawing near. So is your child ready for his exam? Do they have other burning questions to ask on what can be brought to the PSLE exam hall?
Here are some answers that can be really helpful on what you can bring to the examination hall.
1) Are correction tapes allowed?
No. From the year 2021 onwards, correction tape is not allowed this year (Not in previous years) mainly because it will be marked by computer and when answer scripts are scanned, the correction-taped part will be black in color. From what we know, MTL and Foundation subjects both paper 1 and 2 are to be marked by computers.
2) Can the child use pencils?
Markers do mark answers written in pencil. However, if your child really hates the pen, do make sure you bring at least a few HB or 2B pencils. They are dark enough and can be used for OAS shading. Do not use mechanical pencils because the lead breaks easily and precious time is wasted to load new leads. We recommend using pens (except for OAS) because it is stressful to switch between pencils and pens.

3) Is only blue ink pen allowed?
No, your child can write in any colours. Markers will mark as long as there are workings on the answer sheet and answer lines. However, we do recommend sticking to conventional colours like blue and black. Only 0.5 ink is allowed during exam as 0.7 ink pens smudge easily and the working becomes untidy.
4) Are erasable ink pens allowed?
Yes, however, it is a highly discouraged practice. Answers in erasable ink may 'magically' (or unfortunately disappear or become so light in shade) that the answers are hardly visible by the time they are on the marker's desk. Markers will only mark what is on the script so marks are penalised as a result.
5) Can my child request for blank paper for workings?
Yes, your child can have as many blank sheets as he/she wants. A tip is to ask for them early at the start of the exam instead of in the middle of the exam as your poor child may get tired for putting up the hand instead of focusing their energy on answering the questions.
6) Are only approved dictionaries or calculators allowed?
Yes, if your child does not bring an approved one, it would not be allowed in the examination room. All dictionaries or calculators must be approved by the schools before PSLE. A special sticker will be pasted on them.

7) Is the water bottle allowed into examination room?
No, water bottle is not allowed unless your child has a special medical condition. We recommend not drinking too much water before the exam. Your child has to walk out to drink water after getting permission from the examiners. Most kids won’t do that because there is no time at all!
